THE PROGRAM
The Executive Program for Social Innovation Design at the University of Pennsylvania (XSD) combines rigorous training in design with strategy tools for social impact.
THE FINAL PROJECT
XSD culminates in a final community studio project that imagines innovative solutions for a social problem and applies the tools learned in the course to ideate and prototype ideas for change.
PROJECT GOALS
For my final project, I explored the concept of redesigning the fertility clinic waiting room to support women in Los Angeles to feel empowered and make informed decisions in their fertility journey to conceive a child using donor sperm.
THE SOLUTION
The women I interviewed and observed expressed pain points that circled around these common themes: feeling alone, time commitment, confusion, emotional strain, and financial uncertainty. Redesigning the fertility clinic wait room addressed most of these conflicts by creating new opportunities for community building (reducing common feelings of isolation in the journey to conceive), mitigating the emotional stress of waiting in silence, providing educational empowerment with addition of educational literature, and integrating technology to inform patients of wait times so they can have more ownership in the process.
